MEDiCiNE ! overview Any wolf or dog here on When The Music Stops can become a healer. The knowledge is, usually, passed down from one healer to the next, but it is not unheard of for a canine to simply explore the craft by themselves. There is a dark side to the craft, however, and herbs that can be powerful healing agents can also be brewed into deadly poisons. To keep things realistic, and a bit challenging, there are a great many aspects to the Medicine system. Such things as specific recipes for potions, herbs that only grow in certain locations, and tools that can be crafted, but can also break. Should you decide to follow in the pawsteps of those before you, and learn how to mend scrapes and set bones, you will want to keep this article as a sort of guidebook. Best of luck to you! rules and guidelines 01. In order to gather herbs/materials, one must post a thread in the location that is correct for the herb/material they are trying to find. You won't find Canis Root in the swamp, for example. Note: During the part of the site plot that involves all dogs living within Sang city, herbs/materials can be gathered throughout the city. Humans often grow herbs in their gardens, and animals can be found both within and on the outskirts of the city. If you have questions, please feel free to contact a staff member. 02. You may gather up to three herbs/materials per post, and fifteen per thread. Remember that the more rare an ingredient, the more difficult it is to find, and therefore the less you will gather per trip. 03. The time it takes to craft something is listed in IC days. However, you cannot simply make one long post where your character spends however many days crafting something. When crafting, you are limited to one IC day per post, and however many IC days you want per thread. 04. Since it would be almost impractical for there to always be at least two characters to a thread when gathering herbs/materials or crafting something, you are allowed to simply roleplay alone. You must clearly state that the thread is for gathering/crafting, and that you will be roleplaying alone, in the first post. You must also have at least one real life day (24 hours) between posts in your thread. 05. Keep your character's knowledge of medicine realistic. If you have a character who comes from a long line of healers, they might know how to do the more difficult recipes. If you have a character who is attempting to explore the craft by themselves, for the first time, and has no mentor, they would blunder through a lot of things before getting it right. Experience in the craft can be gained by trial-and-error, or by having a mentor to help you along. 06. Remember, just because someone told you that Blisterwort and Canis Root can make a sleeping potion, doesn't mean you know the correct amounts of each nor how to combine them properly. 07. You do not have to be a healer to know how to use certain ingredients. For example; Most wolves, since the species has lived in the wild their entire existence, know that honeycomb is an excellent first-aid, and know how to apply the honey to stop bleeding. Dogs might pick up useful information by watching the humans they live with/around. This also goes for crafting; Any dog or wolf can learn how to craft a recipe book, mortar and pestle, or container (which you will find in the crafting thread). 08. The effects of potions and poisons are all kept within reason. No healing potion can magically heal wounds, and no poison can instantly kill an animal. Specifically with poisons, there is only one that has the potential to kill, and that is only if the affected character doesn't get it out of their system. 09. In order to use a potion or poison, you must have permission from the roleplayer of the affected character. You cannot slip some poison in their food and have them fall ill without first asking the roleplayer. Not asking permission is considered power-playing. 10. If you have anything you want to see added to the ingredients list or recipe list, feel free to post in the Contact The Staff board with what and at least two reasons why for each thing. We want nothing more than to see our lists full of your ideas! It should be noted that the ingredients are taken from the game Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, which is a mix of real and fictitious. All crafting items must be made of natural materials (rock, wood, etc.) and must be able to be crafted with paws and simple tools (and some imagination haha). 11. We understand that a wolf or dog using herbs to craft potions, or crafting books and writing down recipes, isn't exactly realistic--though the world where they can would be awesome--but we want to maintain some sort of realism to this fictitious aspect to the site. Hence, all the rules and guidelines. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please feel free to contact a staff member. ingredients BLiSTERWORT. A small mushroom with a gray stalk and a rust-colored cap. |
USES. The rust-colored cap of Blisterwort is poisonous if ingested. The cap is tasteless and can be cut or ground and mixed with food to create an undetected poison. The effects of Blisterwort cap vary from animal to animal, but for canines it is known to induce severe stomach cramps, vomiting, and diarrhea. The symptoms take about an hour to appear, and will last for as long as the cap is in the canine's digestive tract.
The gray stalk of Blisterwort isn't poisonous, and can be eaten relatively safely. Ingesting the stalk, however, will cause drowsiness and disorientation as soon as it hits the stomach. The affected canine may not fall asleep, but their reaction time will decrease drastically and their thinking might be skewed. The effects don't last for long, however, and usually wear off once the stalk exits the stomach and enters the intestines. [/ul]
BLUE MOUNTAiN FLOWER. An eye-catching blue flower that grows in large clusters.
USES. The head of the Blue Mountain Flower can be a very potent pain reliever. To release its full potential, the flower must be ground to a pulp and mixed with water to create a soup, but the flower itself can also be eaten without preparation. The petals of the plant promote healing if applied directly to a wound, having a natural antibiotic attribute that keeps infection at bay. [/ul]
CANiS ROOT. Hard scraggly roots of the Canis plant.
USES. The tough woody roots are extremely poisonous. When ingested, the roots cause delirium--fever, restlessness, and hallucinations--often leading the affected canine to injure itself or others. The effects of the plant can last anywhere from 24 to 72 hours, relative to the amount ingested. Canis root is also very addictive, and after the effects wear off, symptoms of withdrawal set in. [/ul]
CREEP CLUSTER. Stark red vines cut from a surface-dwelling plant called a Creeper.
- LOCATiON. The Creeper plant can only be found in the hottest part of The Badlands. The plant is red, blending with the rock on which it thrives, and its vines are long and thin. One the reasons it is difficult to obtain, aside from location, is the fact that venomous snakes inhabit the same nooks and crannies as the plant, making its gathering dangerous. One plant will have a multitude of vines, spreading as far as three feet in any direction. Younger plants are more of an orange color, and more mature plants are a deep maroon.
USES. The vines of the Creeper plant have a very unique effect. They are not toxic, so long as you don't ingest a large amount of them at one time, but instead simply calms one's anxiety. Whether the patient suffers from an anxiety disorder, or is simply having a stressful day, a small Creep Cluster will take away their worries without impairing their mind or body. The effects have been described as 'not taking away the worry, but allowing one to face them calmly.' Younger vines are weaker in potency, and are most commonly used as a daily medication, or mixed in with other ingredients. Mature vines are very potent and are often used to quell panic attacks and the like.
FROST MiRRiAM. A small plant with broad leaves that resembles the garnish that humans use to accentuate their food.
- LOCATiON. This fickle little plant can only be found in the Pine Forest, hiding along the floor. It prefers the low-light conditions of shady groves full of other foliage, and is often difficult to spot because of this. One found, one must take care to take only the darkest leaves. Harvesting of new leaves, those that are light green in color, can stunt the plant's growth and even kill it.
USES. Frost Mirriam is a muscle relaxant. When used in small doses, it can loosen tight joints and muscles, sooth muscle-related aches and pains, and even allow one to move more agilely through the world. In larger doses, however, this tiny plant can act as a paralytic, and complete immobilize a canine. This includes stopping the heart, as the heart is a muscle, so proper dosage must always be used.
GARLiC. A strong-smelling clove containing multiple small bulbs within.
- LOCATiON. Garlic, when grown wild, sticks to damp and fertile soil. This means that it can only be found in the Pine Forest, typically in shallow dips where pine needles create a blanket that hold moisture in the earth. It is rare under normal circumstances, and even harder to find due to the weed-like appearance of its leaves. The bulb hides beneath the ground, leaving only spiky leaves as an indication of its presence.
USES. Garlic is a widely known and very powerful antibiotic, as well as a strong seasoning for food. A single clove of garlic provides multiple bulbs, each of which is more than a full dose of antioxidants, natural vitamins, and antibiotics. If taken regularly, Garlic is proven to boost one's immune system to help prevent sickness and infection. When used in conjunction with other ingredients, Garlic can help keep infection at bay, and aid in the healing process. A stuffy nose can be cleared temporarily by crushing a bulb and inhaling its strong odor.
GRASS POD. The seed pod to the Spiky Grass plant.
- LOCATiON. Spiky Grass is a weed, plain and simple. That said, it still requires a fair amount of moisture to flourish, and therefore can not be found in the more arid regions of the reserve. The Rolling Plains, Pine Forest, and Hilljack Swamp, however, have it in abundance. Caution is advised when one goes to harvest the seed pod as, given that the plant is a weed, it has many tiny spikes along both the stem and the leaves, each one coated in a naturally irritating balm. Once one is stuck by the Spiky Grass, they might itch for an hour or more, even with a roll in water. It is not recommended that one attempt to lick where they have been stuck, as the balm will simply spread to one's tongue and cause further irritation.
USES. Even though Spiky Grass is a weed, it is actually quite useful. Ingestion of the seed pod (after a good scrubbing, that is) will help settle an upset stomach. The interior of the pod is made of tiny seeds attached to thin paper-like strands that are meant to catch the breeze and carry the seed to a new planting location. The many strands within even one seed pod readily soak up extra stomach acid to help calm it. The seed pod is often used as a first-aid treatment for those who have ingested some sort of toxin. The pod will immediately begin soaking the poison from one's stomach while further medication can be crafted.
HONEYCOMB. Tender combs filled with honey, extracted from a beehive.
USES. The honeycomb itself can be eaten to help boost one's immune system and promote healing. The honey itself can be directly applied to wounds and, since it is a natural coagulant, it will help stop bleeding. Being that beehives can be found all over the reserve, honeycomb is a very efficient first-aid ingredient. When mashed, honeycomb can create a perfect base for many balms or potions. [/ul]
JUNiPER BERRiES. A small blue berry coated with a thin layer of white powder, the fruit of the Juniper Bush.
- LOCATiON. Similar to pine trees, the Juniper Bush has thin needle-like leaves that grow in great quantities. It thrives in the Pine Forest, alongside its taller cousins, and makes up the majority of the forest's foliage. The bushes, and consequently the berries, are plentiful and easily harvested. Simply snap off a small branch that has the desired number of berries, or pick berries one at a time.
USES. While most blue colored berries are safe to eat, the Juniper Berry would give you a terrible case of wet-tail. The berries act as a laxative, clearing out one's digestive tract readily. This can be very useful if a toxic substance has been ingested, but it can also be dangerous. Wet-tail can be a serious condition that leads to dehydration and possibly death.
LAVENDER. An aromatically pleasing flower that is also visually stunning.
USES. The scent of Lavender is perhaps the best pain and stress reliever on the reserve. The petals can be ground to produce an essential oil which is stronger in aroma and can be applied to one's sleeping area. Those who spend time inhaling the aroma can feel stress lift from their shoulders and pain lessen its grip. It is so soothing, some say, that it can even put one to restful sleep. It should be noted that it takes at least six flowers to produce a small sample of essential oil. [/ul]
NAMiRA'S ROT. An abundant mushroom often mistaken for Blisterwort.
- LOCATiON. This mushroom can be found in all places on the reserve. It thrives in both swampy and arid conditions, uncaring of sandy or rocky soil. Wherever there is moisture at least once a year, and some shade once a day, this mushroom can be found. Given its hardy nature, it is very easy to gather a large quantity without traveling far. It is difficult, however, to tell the difference between Namira's Rot and Blisterwort--one must have a trained eye to see the small vein-like lines in the cap of Namira's Rot that Blisterwort lacks.
USES. Namira's Rot is a very powerful hallucinogenic, and extremely addictive. Ingesting it even one time can lead to an immediate addiction, and withdraw from this mushroom is hell on earth. Given its remarkably similar appearance to Blisterwort, Namira's Rot is often mistaken for Blisterwort and wrongly ingested.
NiGHTSHADE. An attractive purple flower that grows on thin straight stalks.
USES. Deadly Nightshade is the single most poisonous plant on the reserve. Every part of it is dangerous to ingest, and will cause almost immediate fever, hallucinations, and excruciating stomach pain. The most dangerous aspect of Nightshade is that it causes the affected canine to feel as though they can neither vomit nor defecate, and therefore the toxin remains in their system. If the toxin stays in the body for more than 24 hours, death may occur. [/ul]
ROCK WARBLER EGG. A pale green egg with brown splotches that is laid by the Rock Warbler.
USES. The yolk of the Rock Warbler egg can be a very useful ingredient. Ingesting it raw promotes healing due to its richness in protein and other essential nutrients. When applied directly to a wound, the yolk has antibacterial properties and will keep infection at bay. The shell of the egg can also be used, as both a container and an ingredient. When ground and ingested, it can also help boost the immune system. [/ul]
YELLOW MOUNTAiN FLOWER. A stunning yellow flower that rivals the audacity of the Dandelion.
USES. The petals of the Yellow Mountain Flower are a very powerful healing agent. They have natural pain-relieving and antibacterial properties which, when a petal is applied directly to a wound or ground and mixed with water to create a paste, can clear a wound of infection and aid its recovery. If the petals are ingested, the antibiotics of the flower spread throughout the body, speeding up the healing of wounds and boosting the immune system. It is said that Yellow Mountain Flower is the only thing that can halt and even reverse the effects of Deadly Nightshade. [/ul]

iNTERMEDiATE POiSON. Creates Medium Poison.
- iNGREDiENTS. Blisterwort, Creep Cluster, water
CRAFTiNG. This recipe will take four days to make, not including the gathering of materials.
Set one cap of Blisterwort in a warm area and allow it to dry out. This takes a minimum of 4 hours of direct sunlight, or 5 hours next to a fire.
Take the now-dry cap of the Blisterwort and grind into a powder. Transfer to a container and set aside.
Roll two stones into a fire to create fire-stones (stones that are red hot).

This poison will cause moderate stomach cramping, vomiting, and diarrhea. On top of that, the amount of Creep Cluster used in the poison will cause listlessness in the affected. If one doesn't have someone else to look out for them, they simply won't care they are sick, and take no action to fix it, leaving them vulnerable to further illness or possible attack. This poison will last for a minimum of three hours.
This poison may be stored in a covered container, and will remain viable for three days. After three days, it will spoil and its effects will become null.

COMPLEX POiSON. Creates Major Poison.
CRAFTiNG. This recipe takes two weeks to make, not including the gathering of materials.
Break two Canis Root apart so that they will fit into a container. Add water until the container is half full. Cover and allow to sit for one week.
Grind one cap of Blisterwort until it is a very fine pulp. Add just enough water and mix to make it a gravy-like consistency. Transfer to container and allow to sit uncovered overnight, or for approximately nine hours.
After both ingredients have been sitting for the appropriate amount of time, place the now water-swollen Canis Root into the mortar. Do not discard the extra water from the container--it will be used later. Grind the Canis Root into a mash.
Add the Blisterwort pulp to the Canis Root mash and mix well. Add the water from the Canis Root container and mix into a smooth liquid. Place the poison into a covered container and allow to sit for one week.
This poison is among the most potent that can be crafted--next to the raw power of Deadly Nightshade, mind you. It will, once ingested, induce delirium--fever, restlessness, and hallucinations--as well as vomiting, diarrhea, and severe stomach cramps. The affected canine may lose all cognitive abilities, reverting back to instinct, and, in nearly every case, becomes a lethal danger to those around them. The effects on the mind will only last four hours at most, but the physical symptoms will persist for a day or more.
This poison can be stored in a covered container, and will remain viable for three days. After three days, it will spoil and its effects will become null. [/ul]
COMPLEX SLEEPiNG POTiON. Creates Major Sleeping Potion.
CRAFTiNG. This recipe takes one week to make, not including the gathering of materials.
Roll stones into a fire to create fire-stones (stones that are red hot).
Add water into your mortar until it is half-full. Place six Lavender flower-heads into the mortar. Stir gently twice to coat the flowers with water. Add a fire-stone so that the water boils. Place a broad leaf or stone over the mortar to hold in the moisture. Once the fire-stone begins to cool, remove it, place it back into the fire, and place the other one in to keep the water at a constant boil. Repeat this process until the flowers have shriveled up--this usually takes two days of constant tending. Do not add more water, simply allow it to evaporate naturally.
Once the flower-heads have shriveled, remove them. Pour the remaining essential oil into a container. Cover and allow to cool for one hour.
Grind one stalk of Blisterwort and one paw's worth of Frost Mirriam into a pulp. Add water, mix gently, and allow to sit for one hour.
Add one paw's worth of Honeycomb to the Blisterwort and Frost Mirriam pulp and grind into a mash. Add the Lavender essential oil. Add water and mix into a smooth liquid.
This is a very potent sleeping potion. Drowsiness sets in only five minutes after ingestion, and is powerful enough to sedate a bear. The taste is an odd mixture of bitter and sweet, but isn't unpleasant. The effects of the potion will last for a full 24 hours, allowing the affected to wake briefly to eat and drink to keep their health up, but remain drowsy enough to fall back to sleep easily. With the addition of the pain- and stress-relieving Lavender, and the muscle relaxing Frost Mirriam, this potion will allow the affected canine to sleep peacefully.
This potion can be stored in a covered container, and will remain viable for five days. After five days, it will spoil and its effects will become null. [/ul]

CRAFTiNG. This recipe takes one day to make, not including the gathering of materials.
Roll two stones into a fire to create fire-stones (stones that are red hot).
Add one stalk of Blisterwort to your mortar. Do not grind. Add enough water to create a soup. Take a fire-stone and drop it into the soup, careful not to burn yourself, so that the concoction boils. Once that stone begins to cool, remove it, place it back in the fire, and place the other one in. Repeat this process so that the soup will boil for three hours.
Once the soup is finished boiling, transfer the mixture to an uncovered container and set aside. Grind two paws' worth of Frost Mirriam, and two paws' worth Creep Clusters, to a fine dust in your mortar. Add back the Blistwort mixture and stir. Transfer to a covered container and allow to sit for one night, or 9 hours. Shake well before using.
This paralysis potion acts as an extreme muscle relaxant. It takes all strength from your limbs, leaving you unable to stand or move more than a few inches. Not only does it sap your mobility, it also affects your mind; The Blisterwort disorients, causing only patchy memory at best, and the Creep Cluster takes away any worries one might have over the entire situation. This potion leaves one completely vulnerable, putting them in grave danger, not just from attack, but also because if the dosage is over by just a quarter-paw, it can cause one's heart to slow or, in rare cases, stop altogether.
This potion may be stored in a covered container, and will remain viable for three days. After three days, it will spoil and its effects will become null.
